Albuquerque is the “high desert.” The altitude is roughly 5000 feet, very similar to the “mile high city”, Denver, Colorado. At that high of an elevation we don’t want the girls arriving Sunday night for the game on Monday. There will be too much acclimation as in, altitude, time zone (1 hr), sitting on an airplane for several hours the whole travel thing. One thing recommended by the Sporting boys team that has done the same thing to Hawaii, Colorado, etc. is to fly in a day early and early enough to have a practice. Then the girls can have a resting day all day Sunday to further acclimate.

We don’t have the luxury of staying in Albuquerque for the necessary time period to become fully physiologically acclimated to the altitude. Since the girls are in excellent overall health/conditioning, the minimum time is thought to be about 4 or 5 days. One of the things we’ll be looking at doing two or three times is have the girls workout “at altitude.” Here are some nearby mountains and their elevations:

It won’t do much for their actual conditioning, but it will let them experience what it feels like to work out at elevation so that during the games they’ll be able to say “Oh, I’ve felt this way before and I can do this.” Maybe we’ll get lucky and draw fellow low elevation teams during the first couple of matches.

Notice that traffic is one way, counterclockwise when looking down on the fields. In the photograph below, all traffic enters and leaves the complex in the upper right corner. There is parking all around the complex and I imagine that some is reserved for doctors, press, referees, etc. hopefully it is interspersed throughout the lots and not all of any one particular one. It appears that they have shade structures for the teams, on the fields when they are playing, but not before or after the match. (or for spectators)

Q:What kind of grass is at the complex?
A:It is a custom blend developed by the complex director. Generally it is a Bluegrass, Rye, and Tall Fescue blend. The complex is over-seeded 2 times per year. (Thanks AS)

Q: What’s it like getting to the fields?
A: Inside sources say the last three miles (from the interstate to the complex can be awful because it’s a two lane road. (Thanks BC)
